EREV, Explained
Hyundai Motor Company recently hosted the 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, South Korea. There, they announced plans for the new EREV powertrain. The acronym EREV stands for Extended Range Electric Vehicle. EREVs have a plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses a smaller battery pack than a normal EV and an onboard internal combustion engine with lower displacement than the usual gas-only model. This gives the vehicles a longer range, since the engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery as needed.
Hyundai Santa Fe EREV
The first release will be a variant of the three-row Hyundai Santa Fe. The Hyundai Santa Fe EREV will be built in the United States at the Alabama assembly line where the gas-powered and hybrid versions are manufactured. It will be equipped with a pair of electric motors and an all-wheel drive system. It’s expected to have a whopping range of 600+ miles.
Hyundai Lineup
The EREV powertrain was designed as a way to bridge the gap from hybrid to electric vehicles. This can help drivers make the switch to an electrified vehicle without worrying about range anxiety. Hybrid vehicles will still be a focus in the Hyundai lineup, however, and there are currently plans to have more than 10 new hybrid models introduced by 2030.
