Floating Feeling, Explained
What do we mean by “floaty,” exactly? Your tires may feel like they’re not completely connecting with the road, or you may feel like you’re drifting as you drive. It can feel disconcerting, and even a bit disappointing, but in most cases, there’s a simple explanation.
What Causes it
Like new shoes, new tires have a break-in period. This can last up to 500 miles. Tires are molded, and part of the molding process involves industrial=grade lubricants that keep the tires from sticking to the mold so they de-mold easier. The lubricant wears off during the break-in period. It’s also worth noting that if you’ve been driving on tires with lower tread depth for a bit, new tires’ flex from deeper tread will result in a bit of a different feel than you’re used to.
How to Fix it
If the floaty feeling is due to the break-in period, time and travel are the solution. Logging more miles will speed the process. However, you should also check your tire pressure, because incorrect pressure can lead to unusual handling. Finally, if you’ve done both of those things and still notice a problem, have your alignment checked at an authorized service center like ours.
