We’ve all had to adapt to ever-changing circumstances over the last year. Mostly, this has meant staying home. As a result, you probably haven’t been driving nearly as much as you used to.

So, what does this mean for your car? It means that you can’t forget about regular service, even if it goes unused most days. Oil changes especially cannot be missed.

What Happens to Oil Over Time?

Oil has a very important job to do. An engine has many moving parts, and in order for them to function properly, they need to be lubricated. This is where oil comes in.

In addition to providing lubrication, oil also prevents dirt and debris from affecting an engine by absorption. Plus, the additives in oil help create optimal engine performance.

Over time, however, oil stops working as well. It gets thick, which makes it harder for those parts to move, it degrades, it loses viscosity, and it gets dirty. This is why regular oil changes are so important! Fresh oil works best in an engine and ensures optimal performance.

When Should Oil Be Changed?

You’re probably familiar with mileage-based intervals for oil changes. Typically, the recommendation is between 3,000 and 6,000 miles depending on your vehicle and your driving habits. This may not be applicable right now, however, if you're not driving nearly as much as you used to.

In this case, it’s important to think about time. Getting your oil changed every six months is a good rule to follow!
